I tried adding hair, but even after caching the dynamics I cannot get it to render in IPR or final render.

You may convert the hairs to the polygons to render them, I have seen such tricks. However, the native hair & spline support will be added in 0.66 release. I am working on this, but before that need to finish the complex 0.65 update

I saw the roadmap, but I assume that is for all future updates.

Shortly, the closest updates will get the following:
0.65 will get acceleration for render time and scene compilation (a lot of work also including quality and memory improvement) 0.66 will get native hair and spline support 0.67 will get material converters initial support
